To appreciate this unusual outback monument and to meet the people whose livelihoods depend on it…

For most of its prodigious length,this epic fence…,

该句中的…despite the presence of the world’s most obserssive fence 指出fence 是世界上最令人着迷的栅栏,表示对其的部分肯定。

Dingoes officially became outlaws in 1830 when government placed a bounty on their heads

Park officials, who recognize that the fence is to blame, respond to the excess of kangaroos by saying “The fence is there, and we have to live with it.”

8.the sheep industry。 It is estimated that since

sheep arrived in Australia, dingo numbers have increased a hundred fold. 明确指出了原因是sheep,其中as a result of ≈since, 由空前的of可知,要填名词或名词短语。

9.economic terms。 The intense private battles between woolgrowers and dingoes have usually served to define the Fence only in economic terms.

10.the fence。 Now they are ubiquitous for without a native predator the kangaroo population has exploded inside the Fence.

Directions: In this section, you will hear 8 short conversations and 2 long conversations. At the end of each conversation, one or more questions will be asked about what was said. Both the conversation and the questions will be spoken only once. After each question there will be a pause. During the pause, you must read the four choices marked A),B),C) and D),and decide which is the best answer. Then mark the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 2 with a single line through the centre.

11.W:I’ll go change my clothes as soon as I finish typing this essay.

M:Okay, Jane. Then we’ll take my car and go out for a meal.

Q:What is Jane doing now ?

12.W:How do you like your new apartment ?

M:Well, it’s quite nice really, although I had a hard time getting used to living in such a big place.

  Q:What is the man’s problem ?

13.W:Did you throw away the extra paper ?

M:No, I gave half of it to a friend and kept the rest.

Q:What did the man do about the paper ?

14.W:Is it supposed to rain tomorrow ?

M:If you believe to the weather broadcast, we’d better bring our umbrella.

Q:What does the man mean ?

15.W:Has the technician called about the repairs yet ?

M:When he does, I’ll have you talk to him.

Q:What does the man mean ?

16.W:Why don’t you go to bed, Jimmy ? You look tired.

M:I have to finish this assignment first. It’s giving me a hard time.

Q:What do we learn about the man ?

17.M:I thought you were planning to take that psychology course at the graduate school.

W:I was, but I spoke with Professor Johnsom and she talked me out of it.

  Q:What did professor Johnson do?

18.W:I have brought lunch. What about eating our lunch in the park ?

M:Good idea. That’s a lot more fun than eating in a restaurant.

Q:Where are they going to eat their lunch ?

Now you’ll hear two long conversations.

 Conversation One

W:Oh, come on, Cain. Why not come and work out gently on the tennis court ? You can’t keep working so hard at the office.

M:No,I don’t think I can today, Lily. I’m expecting all these phone calls I have to be in the office anyway to go through those files from the boss.

W:Oh, come on, Cain. It”s Saturday. You can go through those files perfectly well at home and if people can’t get you at the office, they’ll obviously try to phone you at home.

M:Well, there you are. How can I play tennis with you if people are going to phone me ?

W:Your wife can take the calls and messages and so on and you can phone back.

M:Why don’t you ask Lucy to play with you ? Isn’t she your usual opponent ? And she’s got much nicer legs than me.

W:No,Lucy can’t play… she’s hurt her shoulder and Bruce is up in Salt Lake City for the weekend. So it just has to be you.

M:Look, Lily,I’ll happily go for a short run with you around the park. I could probably do with the exercise. But a game of tennis always takes a couple of hours and I just can’t drop everything so easily.

W:Okay,Cain. Just don’t ask me to do you any favors.

M:Oh, Lily! If you’re going to be like that then, I’ll play. I think I know how …

Questions 19 to 21 are based on the conversation you have just heard.

19.What is Cain doing at the office ?

  20.What does Lily suggest ?

21.According to the passage, Cain would happily______________.

  Conversation Two

M:Good morning, Cindy. Sleep well ? I can never sleep in a strange bed.

W:Oh, I slept like a baby! I’m really impressed with this hotel.

M:Well, the Shangri-la is about the best hotel in Shanghai, you know.

W:It’s great. After you left me last night,I went along the road at the front of the hotel, you know, just around the corner from the taxi rank. I found this wonderful American pub which served great beer and excellent food.

M:Oh, I know the place you mean―the Hard Rock Cafe. It’s just by that fast food restaurant. There’s usually a girl singer or a rock band on stage at the Hard Rock.

W:Yeah, that’s the place. After I’d eaten I didn’t feel like going directly up to my room, so I went to the revolving bar on the roof of the hotel. You get a tremendous view up there.

M:I’m afraid that I can’t really afford to go to roof bars and so on . They are very expensive for ordinary Chinese people .
