Directions: In this section, you will hear 3 short passages. At the end of each passage, you will hear some questions. Both the passage and the questions will be spoken only once. After you hear a question, you must choose the best answer from the four choices marked A), B), C) and D).Then mark the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 2 with a single line through the centre.
Passage One
According to the best historical records and archaeological findings, it is judged that it took about 800 thousand to 1 million years for the earth’s population to reach the total 250 million which existed at the end of the first century after Christ. For some time after that, illnesses, lack of food and wars kept the population growth down to less than 1 per cent a year so that more than 15 centuries passed before the population reached 500 million. But in the next 250 years, up to 1850, the population of the world shot up to the 1 billion mark, and today it has reached 5 billion. It is said by the United Nations officials that in the next 10 years the population of the world will reach 6 billion by the year 2000.
Questions 26 to 28 are based on the passage you have just heard.
26.What will the population size be by the year 2000 ?
27.The reasons why the population growth was slow include _________.
28.What is the general tendency of the population growth over the recent centuries ?
Passage Two
The key question for any only child is this: why were you an only chid ? It’s a key question for at least two reasons. If your parents had wanted several children but could have only you, they are most likely to pour into you all the energy and attention that had been intended for several children.I call this the “special jewel” phenomenon. Only children who are special jewels often arrive when their parents are older―usually in their thirties. These special jewels can become very spoilded and self-centered.
On the other hand, you may be an only child because your parents planned for only one and stuck to their plan. Your parents may give you a very strict and well-structured education to make you “a little adult” Many only children grow up feeling unhappy because they always had to be such “little adults”.
Questions 29 to 32 are based on the passage you have just heard.
29. Who are likely to treat their only children as “special jewels” ?
30.Why do some only children become “little adults” ?
31.What does the passage mainly discuss ?
32.Why do sme only children feel unhappy ?
Passage Three
When a sleepy driver has trouble with keeping his eyes on the road and gets too close to another car, an alarm sound will warn the driver. If nothing is done, the car will automatically come to a stop and in this way prevent an accident. This is a new device which will soon be tested in an experimental car in Japan. The computer warning system keeps track of a driver’s condition by monitoring his heartbeat with signals transmitted from a band around his wrist. The wrist band records the driver’s pulse which measures the heartbeat. Each pulse rate pulse in the wrist sends a signal to the computer. By analyzing the pulse rate, the computer can determine whether a driver is druck, sleeping or ill. Devices in other parts of the car can also tell the computer if the car is too close to another vehicle or is moving dangerously. The computer will sound the alarm when a problem arises, and will automatically stop the car if the driver ignores the warning.
Questions 33 to 35 are based on the passage you have just heard.
33.Why is a computer system installed in an experimental car ?
34.What does the computer system do first when a problem arises ?
35. What is special about the new computer system ?
Section C
Directions: In this section, you will hear a passage three times, when the passage is read for the first time, you should listen carefully for its general idea .When the passage is read for the second time, you are required to fill in the blanks numbered from 36 to 43 with the exact words you have just heard. For blanks numbered from 44 to 46 you are required to fill in the missing information .For these blanks, you can either use the exact words you have just heard or write down the main points in your own words. Finally, when the passage is read for the third time, you should check what you have written.
Any man-made (36) vehicle lauched into (37) space will move in (38) accordance with the same laws that (39)govern the motions of the planets about the sun , and the moon about the (40) earth.
Prior to the time of Copernicus, man (41)generally accepted the belief that the earth was the center of the solar system. But efforts to explain the (42)motion of the planets on this assumption failed. Copernicus pointed out that the difficulties in explaining observations of (43)planetary movement disappeared if one assumed that the sun was the center of the solar system, and that the planets revolved about the sun.
Years later, Galileo took up the defense of Copernicus theory. With experiments such as the dropping of two objects of different size and weight from the Learn Tower of Pisa, (44)he started the thinking that led to our current understanding of the laws of motion.
In the early seventeenth century, Johannes Kepler formulated laws that described the motions of the planets about the sun. (45)The most important were: first, each planet revolves about the sun in an orbit that is an ellipse; second, the imaginary line from the center of the sun to the center of a planet (called the radius vector) (46)sweeps over equal areas of the ellipse in equal periods of time.
Part Ⅳ Reading Comprehension (Reading in Depth)
Section A
和charge sb. with sth.

Section B
Passage One
57.D 由题干中说提及到的in the first paragraph 可以将题目答案迅速定位到文章第一段后半部分but―regardless of whether it is or isn’t―we won’t do much about it. D中very little wil be done 与原文we won’t do much about it意义一致。
58.C 由题干中的人名Al Gore 可定位到第二段第一句…as it merely recognizing it could put us on a path to a solution to relieve global warming.
59.A 由题干中的 more than double by 2050 定位到第三段末句With modest growth, energy use and greenhouse emissions more than double by 2050.
60.B 根据题干中的signing of the Kyoto Protocol 定位到原文第四段最后三句。 B中few nations have adopted real tough measures 和本段最后一句中didn’t adopt enough policies意义相符。
第二段中作者谈到认识到这一问题并不代表找到解决方案,然后提出论点:and―without major technological breakthroughs―we can’t do much about it(没有大的技术突破,我们仍将无能为力)。 第五和第六段重申论点:the only solution is new technology(解决问题的唯一办法就是新技术)。
