When I was younger, I was crazy about stories of magic. I enjoyed books where wizards(巫师)and warriors(勇士)battled the powers of darkness in strange worlds. I was excited when they succeeded bringing peace and happiness to their lands. I guess like most of the readers of these stories I secretly wished for magical powers for myself. I wanted to be able to magically make my pain disappear, to make my problems go away, and to have power over this world that so often has power over us.
As I got older, however, I realized that there was no such thing as magic due to the harsh reality of life. I struggled through a long period of poverty. I had daily pain from a back injury that never healed right. I felt sadness and sorrow when both of my sons were diagnosed with Autism (自闭症).I still sometimes daydreamed of magic but in time even, that faded away.
Then one day I am not sure when I began to discover a different kind of magic. This magic grew stronger in my heart, soul, and mind day by day and year by year. This magic was called LOVE. It connected me to my own highest self and to all of the other souls in this world. It didn’t remove my poverty but it made every day of my life feel richer. It didn’t make my back pain go away but it helped me deal with it so much better. It didn’t cure my sons’ Autism, but it helped me see them as the beautiful, loving, and joyful souls that they truly are. It didn’t make me a wizard or a warrior but it helped me to dispel (驱散)the darkness of this world with my own light.
There is such a thing as magic in this world. There is such a thing as magic in each one of us. This magic is called LOVE. May you choose it, share it,and live in it every single day of your life. May you use it to help others, to heal this world, and to build a bridge to Heaven.

27. What is considered magic in the author’s opinion?
A. The highest self. B. The great love.

During last year’s presidential debates, and through this year’s speech, Merriam-Webster has been an active presence on Twitter, sharing words experiencing an increase in search.
You might even say the dictionary provided a safe space on social media, or “a place (as on a college campus) intended to be free of unfairness, conflict, criticism, or potentially threatening actions, ideas ,or conversations. ”
It’s suitable, then, that “safe space” is among the 1,000 new additions Merriam-Webster made to its online dictionary today. The word was first used in 1970,and has been used by colleges post-election to describe themselves as campuses that will protect students who might feel in danger due to their religious faiths, sexual beliefs, race or gender.
Not all of the added words have been around for decades. Some of them, like “ binge- watch” and “photo bomb ”,are products of newer technologies, but saw big increases in recent use.
In an announcement, Merriam-Webster explained its methods :“ In some cases ,terms have been observed for years and are finally being added; in others, the fast rise and broad acceptance of a term has made for a quicker journey. "
In a statement to The Huffington Post, Merriam-Webster's editor-at-large Peter Sokolowski added that the words announced today were added to the dictionary’s digital pages. “The online dictionary gives us both more space to expand entries and a way to add them more quickly, ” he said.
Other entries are updates of pre-existing words, such as “ ghost” used as an informal verb, and “train wreck” used to describe “a disaster or mess. ”
The new additions come from medicine, sports, literature ,fashion, politics and technology. One even comes from the name of a productive word inventor — “ Seussian” meaning “ suggestive of the works of Dr. Seuss. ”

A. It is frequently used in the president’s speech.
B. It is only used in Merriam-Webster and Twitter.

D. It is used to refer to the college campus on social media.
29. Why is “photo bomb” added to the dictionary?
A. It is being widely used now. B. It has existed for many years.
C. It is a new technology word. D. It has an updated usage.
30. What is considered magic in the author’s opinion?
A. The highest self. B. The great love.
C. Share of pleasure. D. Removal of poverty.
30. What is the advantage of an online dictionary?
A. It makes for the fast rise of new words.
B. It has more space to add more words quickly.
C. It shares words with other media like Twitter.
D. It makes new words more popular with people.
31. Which word is newly added as it has a different usage?
A. Binge-watch. B. Disaster. C. Ghost. D. Seussian.

Sleep is as mysterious as it is important for our health. Over the decades, researchers have put forward several systems through which sleep makes us energetic again, but we still don’t fully understand the big picture. Now, two recently published studies come up with an interesting explanation : we sleep to forget some of the things we learn during the day.
We store memories in networks in our brains. Whenever we learn something new,we grow new connections between neurons (神经元),called synapses (突触) In 2003,,Giulio Tononi and Chiara Cirelli, biologists at the University of Wisconsin-
-Madison, put forward something very interesting :during the day ,we learn so much and develop so many synapses that things sometimes get unclear. Since then, the two and their colleagues have made quite a few interesting additions to that study.
For starters, they showed that neurons can cut out some synapses, at least in the lab. Butthey suspected the same things happens every day, naturally, in our brains — probably during sleep.
So they set up a painstaking experiment, in which Luisa de Vivo, an assistant scientist working in their lab, collected 6,920 synapses from mice, both awake and sleeping. Then, they determined the shape and size of all these synapses, learning that the synapses in sleeping mice were 18 percent smaller than in awake ones. That’s quite a big margin.
After this, they designed a memory test for mice. They placed the animals in a room where they would get a mild electrical shock if they walked over one particular section of the floor. They injected some of the mice with a material that had been proved to prevent the cutting of new synapses. The mice that experienced this would more likely forget about the section and after a good night’s sleep, they tended to walk over the section again, while mice that slept normally remembered better.
Then, Dr. Tononi and his colleagues found that the cutting didn’t strike every neuron. Some 20% were unchanged, likely well-established memories that shouldn’t be changed.
In other words, we sleep to forget 一 but in a smart way.
32. What did Dr. Tononi find in his early research?
A. We store what we learn in synapses.
A. We grow new synapses when we sleep.
B. Synapses are connections between neurons.
C. Some synapses are cut out during sleep.
33. What may the underlined word “margin” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Mistake. B. Number.
C. Difference. D. Surprise.
34. Why did the injected mice go to the electric section again?
A. They didn’t sleep well and forgot about it.
B. Their neurons didn’t cut the new synapses.
C. The injected material cut their memory of it.
D. Their synapses are too small to remember it.
35. What’s the text mainly about?
A. An interesting function of sleep. B. The importance of sleep.
C. A memory test for mice. D. Neurons and synapses.
